MINOR says voter ID still unsettled law

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 24, 2014

BILL MINOR: Voter ID is not yet settled law

Anyone who thinks it is settled law that states can require photo ID in order to vote is barking up the wrong tree.

All sorts of land mines have been planted by courts in a half dozen states which could eventually put the photo ID scheme back in the grave where it had resided for decades among other Jim Crow practices until recreated by Republicans as a vote integrity measure.

Several federal judges – ranging from Wisconsin to Texas – have found when asked to rule on ID cases, that voter “integrity” is just a camouflage for voter suppression.

Back in April a judge in Wisconsin had struck down that state’s restrictive voter ID law, holding that it disproportionately prevented voting by poorer and minority citizens. An appeals court in September had allowed the law to go into effect. Then, a week ago, the Supreme Court stepped in and blocked the appeals court ruling.
