HARRISON looks at 2015 Legislature and #MAEP

BOBBY HARRISON: 2015 Legislature will face new dynamics on MAEP

During the past two sessions, Speaker Philip Gunn’s top lieutenant on education issues – Rep. John Moore, R-Brandon – has introduced bills to either repeal or amend the law that says the Legislature “shall fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.”

The proposals died in committee.

The law that Moore, chair of the House Education Committee, was looking to repeal is the one on which former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove’s lawsuit against the state is based.

The law, passed in 2006 during the administration of former Gov. Haley Barbour and supported by him, is simple. It says as already stated that “effective with Fiscal Year 2007, the Legislature shall fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.” That’s it – the complete text of the law.
