Childers faces long odds in quest to topple Cochran
Experts say Childers also will have to defend his congressional record, which includes a vote against the 2010 Affordable Care Act, one of Obama’s signature issues.
“I thought we could have done better,” Childers said of the law. “(But) here are the facts. It passed. It is the law of the land. It has a lot of good features to it… And there are some things, quite frankly, that will need some attention and some work. I’m willing to sit at that table and work those out.”
Childers supports a state expansion of Medicaid under the 2010 law, which could benefit 300,000 Mississippi residents. State GOP officials, including Cochran, say the state can’t afford the expense of expansion.
Cochran has repeatedly reminded voters he opposed the Affordable Care Act, which is unpopular in Mississippi, and has worked to repeal or replace it.
“I don’t care if you voted against it 500 times,” Childers said. “It’s not going to be repealed… Stop misleading the people of Mississippi. ”
