Chris McDaniel has the talk radio universe of endorsements cornered. From Glenn Beck to Mark Levin to Andrew Wilkow and more, McDaniel has the who’s who of the hard right talk radio crowd on his team. As a former tough talking talk radio star himself, that should come as no surprise. It may be just a professional courtesy.
Andrew Kaczynski at BuzzFeed today released yet another barrage of clips from Republican Senate Candidate Chris McDaniel’s life as a hard right talk show host. After the Wall Street Journal broke the story late last week about the audio clips in the public domain, more and more has come out about them. In those clips, McDaniel spoke in a negative light about women, gays, black people and ‘Mexicans’.
Now, it would appear that McDaniel was at the very least an equal opportunity offender. In the clips below, McDaniel and his cohost go on for minutes on topics like the fictional Al Jazeera Home Shopping Network, a brokeback mountain spoof starring Rosie O’Donnell and former Attorney General Janet Reno and a spoof on former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani in drag.
The question now is, was McDaniel just acting and not saying what he really thought or is this really who he was/is? Is it a schtick? How can voters who may not have ever been introduced to him before tell the difference?
On the Al Jazeera Home Shopping Network
On what an Al Jazeera “home shopping network” would be like:
McDaniel: “My imagination is running. What about the Al Jazeera home shopping network? What do you buy there, like, swords?”
Co-Host: “Burqa.”
McDaniel: “Burqas, swords, sandals.”
Co-Host: “Pink, black, white. Which one do you like the best?”
McDaniel: “I like it. It sounds fabulous. Maybe some non-pork products.”
Co-Host: “Non-pork and also there’s burqas. Numerous sizes, colors, fabrics. Silk burqas. Burlap burqa. Linen burqa.”
McDaniel: “And the fabulous Muslim music. The Ramadan calendars.”
Co-Host: “Yes, let’s say you live in a cold area. Let’s say you’re in Dearborn, Mich. It’s a little cold, maybe you want a wool burqa. You can get it on Al Jazeera Home Shopping Network.”
McDaniel: “Sports Illustrated Ramadan bikini.”
Co-Host: “Can you imagine the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition on Al Jazeera Home Shopping Network?”
McDaniel: “That’s hot. That is so hot. Don’t talk about that.”
Co-Host: “Who’s the cover model? Nice eyes. Nice, big eyes. ”
McDaniel: “Absolutely. She’s fine.”
Co-Host: “Unlimited parody. Very, very disturbing.”
McDaniel: “Look at her wrist. That’s a beautiful wrist.”
Co-Host: “Nice ankle. Oh wait, is ankle grounds for slaughter?”
Mcdaniel: “Yes. She’ll die for that.”
Co-Host: “Wrist, OK? Ankle, no?”
McDaniel: “Wrist is ok. Ankle, she’ll die.”
Co-Host: “She’ll die for that. There’s a price for beauty—it’s death.”

Curiously, he went on Bryan Fischer’s radio program yesterday to defend his remarks. Fischer played it off as the liberal media having in essence “no sense of humor”. In that interview, when asked about his prior talk radio comments, McDaniel said, “This was the best they’ve got? Most of it’s way out of context, anyway”. He went on to say, “It was talk radio. We were just having a conversation. No harm was meant.”
However, from the YallPolitics Memory Division, McDaniel was quizzed in October 2013 by Fischer shortly after he announced for Senate about whether he would stick up for his beliefs. McDaniel specifically mentions his background as a talk radio host and says that it’s been an integral part of his message for over 20 years.”

Fischer: Now a lot of people Senator McDaniel, and I don’t mean this in anyway as an insult to you at all but, we’ve heard a lot of candidates say that. You know, ‘you send me to Washington and I will fight on your behalf, if necessary I will shut that place down, I will bring it to its knees to restore the constitutional Republic’ and then they get there and then they fold like a cheap Bedouin tent in a stiff desert breeze. So why should the voters in Mississippi believe things are going to be different with you?
McDaniel: That’s fair. I’ll tell you why. I’ve been in the state Senate six years. I have a record. I have a record. Look at my record and recognize it for what it is. It is a strongly conservative record with no compromises and no surrenders. Likewise, even before that. This message I’m delivering is a message I’ve been delivering for twenty years. It’s been consistent. You’re not going to see any waffling or equivocation. I had a talk radio show much like this for some time. And this is the message I delivered. (emphasis added) After I left that, ran for office, this is the message I delivered. At the end of the day the only thing that saves this republic is a consistent message of conservatism.
At the end of the day, McDaniel is rather meekly complaining that these clips (now numbering 8 or 9 at this point) were being “taken out of context”. However, he’s not taken the opportunity to put them into context. What exactly is the context where these comments are OK?
So, we will leave it up to readers to decide. Is McDaniel’s past talk radio persona a schtick or is it indicative of the man, what he’s really made of and how he’d vote as a US Senator?
