Mississippi Sheriffs could be getting a raise

Sheriffs pay bill held for debate

Some sheriffs could see a $20,000-a-year boost in pay beginning July 1.

On Tuesday, the Senate approved House Bill 1409, which passed unanimously last month in the House. The bill would be on its way to the governor, but it was held on a motion Tuesday that could allow more debate.

Under the new bill, sheriffs would make between $75,000 to $99,000 a year, depending on the population of their county, up from $55,000 to $90,000 currently. The sheriffs of Humphreys, Benton, Choctaw, Quitman, Franklin, Jefferson, Sharkey and Issaquena counties are in line for the biggest raises, at 36 percent each, bringing them to $75,000 a year.
