Biloxi council finally steps up to the plate and approves stadium bonds (updated)

After nearly two weeks of delays, the Biloxi City Council finally put the final stamp of approval on a project which will result in the construction of a $36 million minor league baseball stadium along U.S. 90.

During a special call meeting Tuesday morning, the council voted 5-2 to enter into contracts with architects for the stadium and entered into leases and subleases with the Beau Rivage, Southern League and team ownership.

Most importantly, the council finally passed a resolution which will allow the city to receive $15 million in grant funding from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and voted to issue $21 million in general obligation bonds which will provide the bulk of the project funding.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Biloxi native Barry Lyons, a former Major League player who has worked tirelessly to bring professional baseball to his hometown.
