EANGUS ANNOUNCES 2014 EAGLE & MILITIA AWARDS FOR U.S. HOUSE
The Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States (EANGUS) is pleased to announce that U.S. Representative Steven Palazzo (R-MS) has been selected to receive the G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Eagle Award. The award is given to members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives who have contributed outstanding and exceptional service to the National Guard.
U.S. Representative Steven Palazzo is the only member of Congress concurrently serving as an enlisted member of the National Guard and has worked tirelessly to support his fellow National Guardsmen. In 2013, Representative Palazzo fought to protect dual-status military technicians from furlough; worked to ensure that the National Guard Lakota helicopter program was not cut from the President’s budget; held the Air Force accountable for their lack of foresight in a fiscally constrained environment when they attempted to arbitrarily move National Guard flying missions without considering the costs associated with the move; and introduced bipartisan legislation to expand the National Guard’s cyber capabilities.
EANGUS President John Helbert stated, “Congressman Palazzo’s support for the National Guard is second to none. I am pleased to acknowledge Representative Palazzo’s hard work on behalf of members of the National Guard by awarding him the 2014 G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery Eagle Award. It is even more significant, since Sonny Montgomery served as both Adjutant General and U.S. Senator for the great state of Mississippi.”
Congressman Palazzo stated, “As a veteran serving in Congress, I try to be a voice and an advocate for all of our men and women in uniform. But having spent 25 years in the Guard and Reserves, I understand the Guard’s unique role and the need for a strong advocate. Over the past year, I was honored to be able to specifically advocate on behalf of military technicians at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and across the nation. I want to thank EANGUS for their work on behalf of enlisted Guardsmen and I plan to continue partnering with them to ensure our men and women in the National Guard receive the recognition and treatment they deserve.”
