Sec. of State Hosemann recoups $1 million for Rankin schools
When a store accidentally overcharges for a product, consumers usually return and ask for the extra money back. So when a gas company mistakenly took out too much money from a local school district, the state Secretary of State asked the funds – a more than $1 million oversight – be returned to the schools.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann took the money back to Rankin County Schools on Thursday, presenting a ceremonial million-dollar check to district administrators at Northshore Elementary School. But though the giant check may have been ceremonial, the money was definitely real.
The money was returned to the district by Denbury, LLC, an oil and gas company with mineral interests on 16th Section land in Rankin County.
