Insurance commissioner joins BCBS in lawsuit
The decision by Blue Cross Blue Shield to drop Health Management Associates hospitals from its network providers list has state leaders pitted against each other.
Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney has joined the insurance provider in a lawsuit challenging Governor Phil Byrant’s executive order for Blue Cross to reinstate HMA hospitals for 60 days.
Bryant says the time is needed to investigate whether any laws were broken.
Blue Cross asked U. S. District Judge Henry Wingate Friday to issue a temporary restraining order to prevent the governor from enforcing the order.
They claim the governor does not have the legal authority to intervene.
Chaney claims the governor took over the authority of the Insurance Department when he issued the order.
