House Democrats call for full funding of MAEP

A new study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows that Mississippi spends $648 less on education per student than it did prior to the recession in 2008. According to a release by the Mississippi Economic Policy Center, “These unnecessary cuts deepened the recession, slowed the recovery, and will make Mississippi less prosperous in the future.”
House Democratic Caucus Leader Bobby Moak (D-Bogue Chitto) said, “We all agree that an adequate education is essential for every Mississippian and that an educated work force is the key to improved economic opportunities for all Mississippians. It’s time for our Republican colleagues to step up and do what is necessary and what is right. We call on our Republican colleagues to join us in pushing for adequate funding for our public schools.”
Former chairman of the House Education Committee, Rep. Cecil Brown (D-Jackson) said, “When it comes to growing our economy and securing our children’s future, there is no substitute for full funding of our current education model. Without full funding, Mississippi children are robbed of their best chance at success.”
