30 Miss. schools may face state takeover
Thirty or more Mississippi schools as early as next fall could see their entire staffs fired — from principal to custodians — and new hires made by the state if they earn an “F” rating from the state Department of Education for a third year in a row.
That was the dour news delivered Thursday to members of the state Board of Education by Larry Drawdy, who oversees school conservatorships for the department. The action would be required by state legislation passed in 2010, dubbed the “new start” law.
The law says the department must take over any F-rated school that doesn’t reach a C rating after two years. Department of Education officials, however, wanted such takeovers to be optional on its part. The law targets districts that aren’t failing but have one or more schools that chronically underperform.
