SH write-up on Huntington Ingalls closing Gulfport shipyard
Employees of Huntington Ingalls Industries in Gulfport knew it was coming and the shipbuilder announced Wednesday it will close the Gulfport Composite Center of Excellence by May.
About 700 employees work there, a “large pool” of whom are on loan from the Pascagoula yard.
HII spokeswoman Jerri Fuller Dickseski said 315 workers will be laid off starting in November.
“It’s been going around,” Christopher Reeves, a 24-year-old fitter, said on his way to work. “They say a rumor in a shipyard is more than likely true.”
“You know how rumors are,” said Kindeth Anderson, a 27-year-old composite mechanic. “You don’t want to believe it until it happens.”
Employees were informed of the news before work Wednesday.
