Palazzo, Wicker want answers on Syria

Two of Mississippi’s representatives in Washington want answers before signing off on President Barack Obama’s intention to use the U.S. military to intervene in the Syrian civil war.

Prior to flying to Washington on Tuesday for a classified Senate Committee on Armed Services meeting with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey, Sen. Roger Wicker said there’s still plenty he needs answered.

“I’m going to listen to the testimony and debates before making a decision. I have a lot of questions and I think the American people do also,” he said. “I’d like to know what the administration’s goal is going to be. Is this proposed action so limited and so surgical that it will amount to retaliation only?

“Or, is it designed to alter the momentum and change the battle in a way that might end up in the defeat of (Syrian President Bashar) Asaad. I think it also matters what our allies in the region are willing to do.”
