Don’t book Sen. Thad Cochran’s retirement party just yet
In October 2008, U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran gave me a big scoop.
Mississippi’s senior senator told me in a pre-election interview for his race against Democrat Erik Fleming he would serve one more term and then retire. Cochran, who was then 70 years old, told me point blank, “My intention is to serve six years and if I am healthy and capable of that I will.”
Being the diligent journalist I am, before I went to print, I wanted to make sure I had heard right. I followed up and found out for sure I had.
I wrote the story and by a few years later, folks had forgotten the Cochran remarks to me, and you’d hear politicians say things like “we better pray Thad Cochran runs for re-election.”
