Retire or stay on? Thad Cochran has decision to make
Mississippi may never think it’s a good time for Thad Cochran to retire from the U.S. Senate.
The state’s longest serving member of Congress was contemplating stepping down in 2008 but was convinced that Mississippi, still rebuilding from the horrific destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina three years earlier, needed his clout in Washington.
Now 75, Cochran is yet again weighing what to do. Although he continues to raise money for a 2014 re-election campaign that would most likely be lightly contested, he has indicated it’s not a certainty that he will seek a seventh six-year term. “I can’t serve forever,” he acknowledged in a recent interview.
Just as six years ago when Cochran was considering his options, there will be plenty of people in Mississippi urging him to stay on.
