Veto of school board bill by Bryant likely to stand

An attempted override of Gov. Phil Bryant’s first veto is unlikely to happen, according to the leaders of the Mississippi House and Senate.

Bryant on Tuesday vetoed a bill that would create a task force to study changing from appointed to elected school boards in Mississippi. Overriding the veto would require a 2/3 vote of both chambers of the Legislature.

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and House Speaker Philip Gunn had supported the move to elected school boards like Bryant, and the original bill — Senate Bill 2141 — would have required all school boards be elected, coupled with legislation to require all school superintendents be appointed. But the Senate amended the school boards bill to create the task force because some lawmakers and school advocates said the issue needs more study because there is such a hodgepodge of school board terms and methods of electing or appointing members.
