Cochran could advance on one of two committees

Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran, whose term as top Republican on the Appropriations Committee is expiring, may pursue a position as the highest-ranking GOP member on a different key committee.

Under Senate rules, Cochran’s term as ranking member on the powerful Appropriations panel will expire in January after six years. The panel is the largest in the Senate and writes legislation allocating federal funds to agencies and departments.

“He’s weighing his options,” said Chris Gallegos, a Cochran spokesman.

Final committee assignments are expected next month when the 113th Congress convenes. Cochran also serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee and the Rules and Administration Committee and could possibly advance to the vice chairman’s position on either of those panels.
