MPB – Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves Says Superintendents Elections Should End

By: Magnolia Tribune - December 13, 2012

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves Outlines His 2013 Legislative Agenda

Lt. Governor Tate Reeves is calling for an overhaul of Mississippi’s education system in the 2013 legislative session. MPB’s Lawayne Childrey reports.

In a nearly hour long teleconference yesterday Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves said one of his goals is to change the way superintendents get their jobs. The Lt. Governor believes school superintendents should be appointed rather than elected. He says a study shows of the 150 elected superintendents nationwide nearly half are in Mississippi.

“Now if our overall education performance was in the top 1 or 2 or even in the top decile of all states that might be ok. But when you look at our performance results and consider that were doing something that virtually no other state is doing in electing their superintendents it stands to reason that we would elect superintendents.”
