Thompson calls for DHS investigation
U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson wants the federal government to investigate how the Mississippi Department of Human Services is spending millions in federal money for child-care assistance for low-income working families.
In a nine-page letter dated Thursday, the 2nd District congressman asked U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to initiate a compliance audit of DHS, based on numerous complaints his office has received from licensed child-care providers who participate in the federal child-care certificate program.
“These child-care providers have brought to my attention that they are being forced to accept unreasonable demands being made of them by the state of Mississippi,” Thompson said in his letters. “Child-care providers allege that these demands are causing many facilities to face closure.”
