Southern Miss Receives Check for over Quarter of a Million Dollars
Additional funds to follow
Hattiesburg, Miss.—Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann presented The University of Southern Mississippi with a check for $366,100 in the President’s Conference Room at the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building on the University’s Hattiesburg campus.

“Our colleges and universities are struggling in these lean budget times to educate our children and stay on the cutting edge of higher education,” says Secretary Hosemann. “These funds will support the University’s educational and research mission of the Gulf Coast Research Lab on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.”

The funds are part of a settlement agreement reached in 2002 resolving long standing land issues on a piece of property located at Point Cadet in Biloxi. As part of the settlement agreement, funds generated from rents on the Point Cadet property are distributed among the State of Mississippi, The University of Southern Mississippi, and the City of Biloxi.

“We are extremely grateful to Secretary of State Hosemann and his office staff for overseeing the distribution of these important funds,” said Southern Miss Interim President Aubrey K. Lucas. “We are fortunate to have a distinguished scientist, Dr. Eric Powell, as the new director of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, and he will put these funds to exceedingly good use.”
Including this payment, over $2.5 Million has been distributed to Southern Miss as part of the settlement. The $366,100 check presentation is for Fiscal Year 2010-2011. Funds from Fiscal Year 2011-2012 will be distributed to the University in the near future and are estimated to mirror the amount presented today.
