MCJ Publisher – No Such Thing As Free Money

Democrats say Mississippi can’t afford to forgo $10 billion in federal cash to expand Medicaid, while the Republican House leadership is taking a wait-and-see approach, concerned the expansion, required if lawmakers opt in under ObamaCare, would eventually bankrupt the state.

House Speaker Philip Gunn, R-Clinton, told Mississippi newspaper editors and publishers last week he has “serious concerns” about the long-term affordability of Medicaid expansion, which would go from covering about a fourth of the population to a third.

Gunn still believes Republicans gaining control of the House last election was a mandate for more conservative government and he’s right.

If there’s any hope for curbing the largesse of government, it’s probably going to begin in our state capitols.
