Hosemann says Miss. voter ID law could survive
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said a federal court shooting down Texas’ voter ID law doesn’t mean Mississippi’s won’t be approved, eventually.
A three-judge federal court panel in Washington ruled last week that Texas’ 2011 voter ID law violates the Voting Rights Act. Texas had appealed the Department of Justice’s rejection of its law. A federal panel is also reviewing a South Carolina voter ID law after the DOJ rejected it.
Mississippi’s voter ID law was passed by the Legislature this year after 62 percent of voters in November approved a referendum to require people to display a government-issued photo identification to vote. Mississippi, one of several states still under federal voting scrutiny because of its Jim Crow past, must receive DOJ or Washington federal court approval for election law changes.
