Improving Mississippi’s Education System
On Tuesday, the Mississippi Center for Public Policy welcomed guest speaker Lance Izumi — a renowned national expert on education reform — to a Liberty Luncheon. Izumi argued that even Mississippi’s best public schools are still falling short of national and international standards, and the way to improve them is by giving parents more choice over their children’s education.
As the education reform movement builds momentum, Mississippi’s political leaders are voicing their support. Last week, Governor Bryant proposed performanced-based salaries to reward teachers for results, not seniority. This week, Lt. Governor Tate Reeves announced that charter schools are a top priority for next year’s legislative session and told education reform opponents to “buckle your seat belts” because “education reform is coming to Mississippi.”
