Reeves encourages campers to take stands

Mississippi’s lieutenant governor told a group of middle school students on Tuesday to be willing to stand for their values.

Tate Reeves was among the speakers at the first-year District 6 leadership camp, or d6lc, organized by state Sen. Nancy Collins, R-Tupelo.

About 30 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders from Collins’ Senate district are attending the weeklong camp held at the Renasant Center for IDEAs. Reeves flew in from Jackson on Tuesday morning to be among the camp’s long list of speakers.

He told participants about the 1962-63 Mississippi State University basketball team that defied segregation policies. The team sneaked out of state to participate in the NCAA Tournament against Loyola, a team from Chicago with black players.
