Health Care ruling: Lawmakers got it wrong, too

At least eight members of Congress — seven Republicans and one Democrat — jumped the gun on Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling, tweeting incorrectly that the individual mandate had been struck down as unconstitutional.

Reps. Dennis Ross, Aaron Schock, Virginia Foxx, Justin Amash, Tom Rooney, Steven Palazzo, Buck McKeon and Dennis Kucinich all blew it — in fact, the individual mandate was actually upheld as a tax. The lawmakers reacted in different ways after realizing their mistake.

“Supreme Court rules individual mandate unconstitutional,” tweeted Palazzo (R-Miss.), joined by House Armed Services Committee chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), who wrote “Breaking: #Obamacare individual mandate ruled unconstitutional. More to come…”

Both members of Congress explained the mix-up.

Palazzo cited “much confusion” and McKeon updated later that the outcome was “not completely clear.”
