DeSoto County supervisors seeks November Senate vote

Concerned with the cost and turnout for a special election, DeSoto County’s supervisors are sending a letter to Gov. Phil Bryant’s office asking that the vote to fill the balance of departing state Sen. Merle Flowers’ four-year term be part of the November general and presidential election.

“I hope they can get that done,” said DeSoto Circuit Clerk and Registrar Dale Kelly Thompson. “If we’re going to have a special election, we need to get on top of it now.”

She estimated the cost of a special election at about $60,000. “A large part of that is poll workers. We have to have at least three at each precinct, and each worker is paid $100 for each day they work.”
