Lawmaker: Post about gays drew death threats

Neither the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation nor the FBI could be reached to confirm whether the agency is looking into the threats.

Meanwhile, local legislators and activists say the death threats are uncalled for, regardless of whether Gipson went too far with his post.

“I hate to hear that because of something somebody believes they’re being threatened,” said Rep. Tom Weathersby, R-Florence. “And I hate to see his family threatened in that manner.”

Clay Curry, who is gay and is an activist for gay rights, called the post “completely idiotic” and said he has heard the quote used out of context far too often.

Nevertheless, Curry said, “I don’t think he or his family deserve to be threatened like that.”

A former legislator and classmate of Gipson, Brandon Jones, said citing the scripture in Leviticus was probably taking it a little far.
