A little laughter at the Capital

The state House erupted in laughter Thursday after a conservative Republican lawmaker let slip a double entendre.

Rep. Mark Baker, R-Brandon, was speaking against a bill that would have imposed community service or tobacco education on a minor who committed a crime and also was found in possession of tobacco.

What if, he asked, a teen was being held in youth court overnight or on a weekend because a judge was not available?

Rep. Becky Currie, R-Brookhaven, asked him: “How much would you charge me (to come in) for my child on a Friday night?”

Baker, an attorney who also has served as a municipal judge, said: “I’m easy, but I’m not cheap.

“Late at night, the cost for my services goes up exponentially,” he said.
