Experience cited in GOP setbacks
While this session’s turnover in the House led to predictions that Republicans would parade far-right bills to the governor’s desk, the majority party members say they’re not discouraged by the losses they’ve suffered.
“We have done a lot of the things that we said we were going to do,” House Speaker Philip Gunn said. “And we’ve got four years to pass legislation.”
Lawmakers say the conservative proposals that haven’t survived this session met their fate because inexperienced leaders were focused on different goals, and middle-of-the-road politicians didn’t vote with their parties.
