Bill to allow death row inmate transfers hits snag
A bill that would have allowed Mississippi to ship death row inmates to private prisons has hit a snag and is not likely to pass this session.
The House gave final approval Monday to Senate Bill 2606 by a 118-1 vote, and it appeared to be on the way to Gov. Phil Bryant for his signature.
But on Tuesday, Rep. Kelvin Buck, D-Holly Springs, held the bill for another possible round of debate. House Corrections Committee Chairman George Flaggs, D-Vicksburg, now said he intends to make sure it doesn’t pass.
Corrections Commissioner Christopher Epps said he told Flaggs to drop the idea after he got calls from lawmakers worried about death row inmates being moved to private prisons in their districts.
