State budget decisions all up to GOP

The Mississippi Legislature again will be looking for ways to cut back on spending as it prepares for the coming budget year – a familiar scenario but with a new cast of lawmakers to figure out how to handle it.

This will be the first time since Reconstruction that the GOP has had an opportunity for full control over the budget process.

“I want to be as frugal as possible on the budget,” said Rep. Rita Martinson, R-Madison, “not get ourselves stretched out ahead of time by promising to do things that we cannot do.”

After years of cuts, economists have predicted the state will not have enough money available to keep funding level in the budget year that begins July 1.
