Ron Vincent seeks US Rep. Palazzo’s seat

U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo will face a challenge in the Republican primary from Hattiesburg tea party organizer Ron Vincent.Vincent, a retired engineer, announced his bid for the 4th District Congressional District seat on Thursday, saying Palazzo hasn’t done enough to curb federal spending and cut the national debt.

“The country is going downhill,” Vincent said. “We’re spending too much money and we’re going into oblivion. Somebody’s got to step up.”

The 71-year-old Vincent, who sits on the Lamar County Republican Executive Committee and founded the Pine Belt Republican Club last year, has never run for public office. He said he chose to run after others with more experience turned down his entreaties to challenge Palazzo in the south Mississippi district. The freshman congressman defeated longtime Democratic incumbent Gene Taylor in 2010.
