GULFPORT, MS – Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS), Assistant Republican Whip, offered the following statement about Saturday’s christening of the USS Mississippi in Groton, Connecticut where he will be delivering remarks:
“I am extremely honored to join Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Governor Haley Barbour for the christening ceremony of the USS Mississippi. South Mississippi is no stranger to great shipbuilding. I am very familiar with the pride that our nation’s shipbuilders take in their work. They have every right to be proud. America produces the greatest warships the world has ever seen. These ships are essential in maintaining the economic and national security of our nation.
“The USS Mississippi represents a proud legacy of ships that have borne the same name. Mississippi has a great military history. Countless numbers of Mississippians have served in our armed forces and countless others will someday proudly wear the uniform. I have no doubt that this submarine will go on to a long and distinguished service life. I look forward to the USS Mississippi’s June 2, 2012, scheduled commissioning in my home town of Gulfport.”
