Medgar Evers’ former wife to christen Navy ship
The widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers will visit General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego on November 12 to christen the 689-foot dry cargo ship that bears her former husband’s name.
Myrlie Evers-Williams (bio), who has continued her husband’s work in civil rights, will smash a bottle of champagne against the hull of the vessel during a 9 a.m. ceremony that will be open to the public. Myrlie Louise Beasley remarried after her husband’s death.
The speakers will include Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who served as governor of Evers’ home state of Mississippi from 1988 to 1992.
