Land rights dispute not over

Jackson businessman Leland Speed on Monday continued a legal fight to remove an initiative on eminent domain from the Nov. 8 ballot.

His attorneys filed a notice to appeal a Hinds Circuit Court ruling to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

On Friday, Judge Winston Kidd dismissed Speed’s challenge that the initiative is unconstitutional.

“We believe the initiative (violates) the state Bill of Rights,” said Luther Munford, an attorney for Speed, regarding attempts to restrict eminent domain.

Speed is executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority, the state’s economic development agency, but filed the lawsuit as a private citizen.
