The Clarion-Ledger wins court fight to keep Klan leader from getting its copies of FBI files
Klan leader Edgar Ray Killen lost his bid to get his hands on FBI files in the possession of The Clarion-Ledger.
On Wednesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge F. Keith Ball quashed the subpoena for the copies of 40,000 pages of files the newspaper obtained making up the entire FBI case file on the June 21, 1964, killings of three civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner.
Defense lawyer Rob Ratliff of Mobile, who had subpoenaed the files on behalf of his client, Killen, in his ongoing federal court appeal, said Wednesday, “We still believe there has been a fundamental miscarriage of justice that impacts the integrity of the judicial system. The courts ruling does not alter our claims that previous defense counsel was cooperating with the government.”
