CL Article on MSSC Judge Bubba Pierce and MSCA Judge Virginia Carlton

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 23, 2011

From courtroom to classroom: Judges offer unique insight

Carlton and Pierce, both former lawmakers, are teaching a legislation course at Mississippi College School of Law this semester – giving students a unique perspective of law making and law interpreting.

“It was obvious from the get-go that it was going to be a different type of class,” said 28-year-old law student Frank Leli of Jacksonville, Fla. “It’s a much better learning experience than just hearing the theory.”

Pierce and Carlton are among a dozen or so judges teaching at MC Law this semester.

Across the state, other college students are getting the opportunity to learn from judges heading to the classroom when they leave the courtroom. The judges span nearly all levels of the court system – local, state and federal.

“Judges know the rules and know how the rules are applied in a practical way,” said MC Law Dean Jim Rosenblatt. “They bring great insight, experience and perspective to the classroom, and our students are the beneficiaries.”
