Letter – GulfLive belittled National Guard in chastising Palazzo on missing Christening

On April 4, the editorial board of The Mississippi Press took issue with U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo’s absence at a ship christening in Pascagoula on March 26. The remarks were scathing, and essentially belittled him for speaking at the Mississippi National Guard Non-Commissioned Officers Association.

In effect, this public rebuke of our newest congressman was not only a cheap shot at Rep. Palazzo, but also carried the consequence of belittling the men and women who serve in Mississippi Army and Air National Guard units.

Our association invited Congressman Palazzo to speak at our annual convention for one overarching reason. Of the 535 members of Congress, he is the only one concurrently serving as an enlisted member of the National Guard.

We urge the editorial board to recant its hasty rebuke in this instance. Anything less can only be construed as marginalizing those of us who serve — and have served — in the Mississippi National Guard.
