JATRAN losing $5M per year embarks on building new headquarters costing $6.8M

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 5, 2011

New headquarters for JATRAN likely a done deal

Ward 7 Councilwoman Margaret Barrett-Simon said she wished the council could have known then what it knows today about JATRAN’s inverted revenue stream. The system operates at a deficit approaching $5 million annually and growing.

“I wonder, knowing what we know now about the finances of our bus system, if we would have made the same decision,” Barrett-Simon said.

The cost has gone up, Johnson said, since the complex was initially explored. One reason was that a building planned to house the bus garage burned, and the city had to make plans to build another.
