(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Nunnelee released the following statement after House leaders announced a plan to force the Senate to act on a long term spending solution. The Government Shutdown Prevention Act, which will urge the Senate to pass a spending bill, will be considered on the House floor this week. The bill provides that if the Senate fails to pass a measure by April 6, 2011, then H.R. 1 (as passed by the House on February 19, 2011) would become law. Also, in the event of a government shutdown, Members of Congress and the President would stop receiving their paychecks.
“The Democratic Leadership has failed to act on a spending plan for 39 days now,” said Nunnelee. “The American people and Congress cannot continue to wait while the Democrats who run the Senate keep playing politics. We have given them ample time to put forth a reasonable plan, yet Leader Reid has given us no indication that the Senate is serious about spending reform.”
“I’ve been saying it and will continue to say it; it’s time for the Senate to act. If they have a plan, then they need to send it our way. But, cheering for a government shutdown is not the answer. Real spending cuts, like we passed in H.R. 1, will give businesses large and small the confidence they need to create jobs and grow our economy. If the Senate has a better solution, they should bring it to the table,” concluded Nunnelee.
