Peranich: Coast benefits from House
redistricting plan that passed today

JACKSON (Tuesday, March 15, 2011) – State Rep. Diane Peranich of Pass Christian released the following statement following the 68-53 vote today in which House members approved a plan to redraw their districts.

The state House redistricting plan is the same one members approved March 4, but that went no where in the state Senate. House members added their redistricting plan today to a resolution that also would redraw state Senate districts.

In the process, a last-minute plan proposed by Republican House members failed by a 54-68 vote.

The resolution to redraw House and Senate districts is expected to return to the Senate on Wednesday. Peranich, a House member since 1988, serves on the Joint Legislative Committee on Legislative Reapportionment.

“Today, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed a plan that is unquestionably superior to that proposed by House Republicans for Gulf Coast homeowners,” Peranich said.

“Under the House plan passed today, eight districts extend to the Gulf of Mexico – Districts 109, 111, 113, 115, 117, 120, 121, and 122. Under the Republican alternative, only seven seats would have touched the Gulf – Districts 111, 113, 115, 117, 120, 121, and 122.

“This is significant because it is Coast homeowners who face the greatest challenges in securing affordable homeowners insurance. Diminishing the voice of these homeowners would almost certainly have an adverse impact on important votes for Wind Pool funding and various other insurance initiatives.”
