Madison County may get additional seat in ’11

Madison County could add another seat in the Mississippi Legislature in upcoming redistricting, local legislators say.

With an additional 20,529 residents calling Madison County home according to the 2010 Census, the likelihood exists that the number of House of Representatives districts that include Madison County or some part of it could grow from eight to nine, county representatives told a Madison County Business League forum last week.

“I do believe Madison County will get another representative’s seat, and it will be wholly in Madison County,” said Rep. Mark Baker, a Rankin County resident, who represents District 72 that includes parts of Madison and Rankin counties.
