Tax option Jackson’s top Legislature plea
Within the next two months, state legislators will approve or reject a bill that Jackson leaders say is critical to repairing the city’s crumbling infrastructure.
The local tax option is the lone significant request from the city in this legislative session, and would allow Jackson residents to vote on a 1-cent sales tax that could raise as much as $20 million a year.
If Senate Bill 2839 becomes law, Jackson voters must approve the additional tax by 60 percent to put it into effect.
Yet state Sen. John Horhn, D-Jackson, says history has shown it is a hard sell to get support for bills backed by the capital city in the Legislature.
