Redistricting deadline looms

Officeholders in counties that have undergone large population shifts since 2000 must reshape political boundaries based on official 2010 census numbers, expected by Friday.

But some, including those in the Jackson area, say that doesn’t give them enough time to complete redistricting before March 1 – the deadline for candidates to qualify for county offices in this year’s elections.

“There is no way this can happen,” said Eric Hamer, attorney for the board of supervisors in Madison County, where a growth rate of about 23 percent is projected for the past decade.
“The practicality is nonexistent.”

In Hinds County, the process may prove less miserable, said George Smith, president of the board of supervisors.

“Our consultant on redistricting believes we will be able to meet the deadline.
