Will Thompson Publicly Back DuPree?
In a Southern Political Report article on the Mississippi governor’s race, they mention that Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree is expected to receive the backing of possibly the most prominent Democrat in the state- and certainly the most prominent black Democrat- Rep. Bennie Thompson; now the lone Democrat in the state’s delegation to Washington.
The SPR story argues that African-American voters will make up the bulk of the Democratic primary vote, but I don’t believe that to be the case. Yes, the GOP has several competitive statewide primaries and there is a slow move in some counties to the Republican side, but Democrats for the most part still control county offices outside of the suburban parts of the state.
