Officials ask for delay in candidates’ filing
The DeSoto Board of Supervisors is pressing on with a campaign urging state legislators to help craft a solution to a redistricting time crunch that would allow a delay in the candidate filing deadline to June 1.
Seven area lawmakers are looking into the politically delicate project.
“We don’t think local or private legislation strictly for DeSoto County is an option,” County Administrator Michael Garriga told supervisors at Tuesday’s meeting. He said avenues appear to point to a bill with discretionary language that allows certain counties — such as those affected by apportionment — to shift deadlines.
