CL – Mental health units failing
Community mental health centers have failed to meet their obligations to those with serious mental illness, leading to revolving-door admissions to emergency rooms, hospitals and pricey state institutions, says a new report by the Mississippi Psychiatric Association.
“Everybody at the table has to admit they have a part in the failure,” said Angela Ladner, the association’s executive director. “Now we’re having a discussion about, ‘How do we fix this?’
“If you pay taxes in this state, you’re going to be interested in this. If you pay into the general fund, you’ve got a viable interest in this process.”
It costs taxpayers $335 per patient per day at a state-run psychiatric facility.
