Davis selection to benefit county

The elevation of Sen. Doug Davis, R-Hernando, to the chairmanship of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee will pay dividends in unseen ways to DeSoto County, but Davis will have his hands full seeing to the budgetary needs of the entire state.

That’s the view of Lee County officials who benefited from having the clout of someone from their county holding the purse strings to the state’s nearly $6 billion budget.

Davis replaces outgoing Sen. Alan Nunnelee who was elected to the U.S. Congress on Nov. 2. Nunnelee served as Senate Appropriations Chairman since January of 2008, capping his 15-year Senate career.
