Universities could see 3% budget cut, not 10% to 15%
Mississippi universities for the past several months have been paring back programs, freezing positions and, in some cases, laying off employees in anticipation of double digit cuts in state appropriations for the coming fiscal year.
But Gov. Haley Barbour revealed Monday that he is proposing a modest 3 percent cut to higher education funding for fiscal 2012.
Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds said it’s too early for universities to celebrate or halt their plans for cutting expenses 10 to 15 percent.
“I learned a long time ago not to get too excited or too discouraged at this point,” he said. “There’s a significant difference between a recommendation and a final number.”
