MSU says it reported money overture to SEC
STARKVILLE — Mississippi State University officials confirmed Wednesday the school blew the whistle on Cam Newton last January, a move that, in effect, started the snowball that has enveloped the college football world for much of the last week.
Through a statement, MSU said it contacted the Southeastern Conference in January about “an issue relating to its recruitment” of Newton from Blinn College in Texas. Newton is now the star quarterback for Auburn University, the No. 2-ranked team in the Associated Press national poll.
Since last week, when ESPN.com first reported Newton’s recruitment is being investigated by the NCAA, the issue has mushroomed into college football’s hottest topic.
